What is a soft wood, good for hand carvings?
-
I like to do small hand carvings using a small knife. I usually use small chunks of hard plywood, but they are hard to do larger works with. What is a good kind of soft wood that I could use for hand carvings? Where can I buy or get some? Thank you!

Answer:
Redwood or pine. Try a lumber yard.

My favorite is mahagony. It is soft, easy to work and a little varnish makes it really strong.

Basswood, a fine grained wood that holds detail. Tulipwood if you want harder http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulipwood Chunks of basswood are sold where balsa wood is sold - hardware, hobby and craft stores - although often the places don't know they have it - ask for balsa wood and look nearby.
