How to make and materials i need to use to make fairy wings ?

  • I am needing to make wings as part of our costume for the race for life 2010. We are wanting to wear the wings from start to end and need them to be indestructible but light!!! Does anyone have any ideas on metal wire i can use to make the outer structure and shape of the wings ? We thought abotu teh metal coathanger wire but am not sure what gauge that is or where to get in the uk.........Thanks for reading

    I think the coat hanger gauge wire sounds adequate. You need to buy your tooling from the fabric store to fill in the frame work. I would attach this with a hot glue gun. optional decorative materials could be glitter paint, colored feather boas, large pipe cleaners, etc. Maybe for a harness I would buy small girls pink backpack and run the wings into the sides or sew to the back, Paint over with pink acrylic paint and add the team's name on front of.pack. Now you have a pocket on your back for your keys and tissues.

I think you will need something bigger than coat hanger wire, but you don't say how big the wings are going to be. Here is a table of wire gauges and I think you would want American 14 gauge or the heavier 12 gauge - you can look at the numbers and get the same thickness in the British gauge in your shops. For durability, I think you want to use gauze or the cloth netting that looks like window screen glued to the wire. But the first problem to solve is the harness holding a wood block between the shoulder blades so you can drill holes to mount the wire ends and angle them to position the wings.
