What is the best kiln to get?

How hot does a kiln get?

  • I found a ceramic kiln that someone threw out. How hot does it get (in general-it is a small one).

  • Answer:

Depends on the type of kiln. Most go to at least 1800 degrees, high fire kilns go to about 2400 for electric, if you let them go higher it may ruin the electrical components. Most electrics will have a cone system that will shut them off automatically and the newer ones have electronic controls. I think gas can go higher if you keep the fire on, but they cant go any higher than the melting temp of the refractory fire brick or it melts the brick. Usually they are about 2700 degrees, but I can't remember for sure. Newer gas kilns will have controls that will shut them off when they get to the desired temp or you use a pyrometer and shut it off when it reaches temp.
