What is the best way to make a sculpture out of hardened string?

• Ok so pretty much, my boyfriend just but me 4 roles of kite string thinking I could figure out something artistic to do with them. After alot of thought I've decided to go preschool and wrap the string around balloons until they harden, then pop the balloons and create from there.. 2 questions. Will kite string work for a project such as this? What is the best mixture to use to dip the string in? I've heard sugar, glue, and starch. I want the structures to be sturdy. Anyone done this before?
