How is a zoom aperture fixed?

Is it okay to zoom during video with a variable aperture lens?

  • So I own a Canon t2i rebel and use a EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. I use my camera to shoot video... but I recently read that because this lens has "variable aperture" i should not film the zooming I do. Do some pro shooters still allow their aperture to automatically shift while zooming in film? When I have been doing zooms i do not notice the aperture changing since it is a relatively small change. It doesn't awkwardly appear to be shifting. This is unlike many people who complain that their aperture has extreme shifts such as in the video below. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3W6P-QFwYjU My camera does nothing like this while zooming. Honestly the only way i know the aperture is changing is by the numbers shifting from 3.5 to 5.6 on the bottom of my camera. What do you think? Can i film while zooming or will it bother people?

  • Answer:

If you don't even notice, why would you stop zooming? Do what you want to do, don't listen to people who don't know what situation you have.
