How do you edit a photo to look like this?

i always see this type of photos on tumblr. i know people edit them, but i would like to know how to edit them myself. the pictures look crisp and defined. here's an example: http://oi44.tinypic.com/15f21s6.jpg if someone could explain to me how to edit a photo to look like this i would be ecstatic. tutorials are always good.
