How is a pinhole camera different than a regular camera?

How to take pictures with a pinhole camera?

  • i made a juicebox pinhole camera and i use a kodak 200 35mm film. i leave the shutter open for about 2-3 seconds. is this ok? or would the film become black by the time its developed. my dad said it's probably already black because it should be left open for less than a second.

  • Answer:

It depends on the hole size, aperture, and on the box length, focal length and also in the lighting of the subject you photograph. If you divide the box length in mm by pinhole diameter in mm you'll get your f number and you can generate a chart in here, http://www.mrpinhole.com/exposure.php If you don't have a lightmeter, for a box 50 mm long and a hole .25 mm diameter, you would need about 3 sec in full sun, 15 sec in half sun and 1 min in full cloudy

My pinhole camera is f235. I use a light meter to measure the light, then use a conversion chart to arrive at a shutter time. I also use low ISO film. I do this because I WANT exposure times to be a matter of seconds. You can actually count, (I also have a little beeping seconds timer), full seconds pretty accurately. If you use a fast film, your exposure can calculate out to be something like 1/5 second, and there is no way to count that. You also have to account for film reciprocity failure. This means that as longer exposure time is needed, you have to add more and more time, and it is a non-linear amount. About all you can do is practice until you get it all down with your camera, but until you have a knowledge of your fstop, use a low ISO film so you can count seconds, and use an external light meter, you will never get good, consistent control of your exposures. As example of what can be done with a pinhole camera, here is some work I have done with mine, which uses 120 film in the 6 x 9 format: http://www.lightanon.com/-/lightanon/gallery.asp?cat=161310 http://www.lightanon.com/-/lightanon/gallery.asp?cat=133868 http://www.lightanon.com/-/lightanon/gallery.asp?cat=133869 steve
