How to become a professional fashion photographer?
-
I'm a 20 year old guy. And I'm a amateur photographer. I have interest in this profession because I love taking pictures. But I have no knowledge in Arts. Currently, I own an old SONY Cyber-shot camera. What are the things that I need to buy? And what are the ways to becoming a fashion photographer? Help me out! I don't want to be an office clerk/temp!

Answer:
1) you'll need to learn to use a DSLR... 2) you'll need to learn exceptional photography... 3) you'll need to prove you can take exceptional photos first time, every time... 4) you'll need to learn about light and angle and depth of field and colour and everything else in fashion... 5) then you'll need to sell your services to a fashion house, venue, etc... 6) you'll need to go up against many hundreds of other photographers for the same gig!!!

Beyond anything else you need contacts in the photography and fashion industry. Impossible to crack at the top level, easy at the bottom, with start-up and small companies advertising for cut-price photographers on line (in Australia for instance, they turn up on serviceseeking.com). You may not earn a living chasing these small-timers, but you can start to build a portfolio. The classic way into the field is assisting: your current level of knowledge isn't going to get you in that way, which means you will have to freelance; and that means owning your own equipment. Ninety percent of Fashion (boardwalk) is shot on Full Frame Canon and Nikon DSLRs. The cheapest (and most popular) tool is the Canon 5D MkII (there are rumours of a MKIII which should drop the price even further) and for a serious tilt at this field, you should aim to own one. You could certainly get by with a Canon 7D or Nikon D700, but the extra investment may be worthwhile if you are committed. Studio work is basically down with medium format gear - the very cheapest of these cameras is $10,000, the next step up is $30,000 - needles to say, that is quite a big investment in a camera you have no idea how to use - and in any case, studio work means mastering lighting as well - then there is all the post-production work, and the need to work with Creatives, Art Directors and very demanding high-end clients. Even if you manage to learn the basics and get enough work with little companies to develop a portfolio and some confidence, you are going to have to invest in your education: look into college and university courses in photography (NOT "fashion photography" - a good photographer can photograph anything; you need a broad focus (sorry about the pun) before you narrow your sights to just one element of the field; other things aside, you are better working somewhere in the photo game while looking for your "break": than floundering around an office without any chance at putting the skills you have learnt into practice. Good luck!
