Metameric colours?

  • Hi folks, Time for me to spend some hard earned points and ask a question... it's a toughie and I could do with some advice or information please. Metamerism relates to the way colours change under different lighting conditions: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metamerism_%28color%29 I'm looking for information on how to identify colours that shift more markedly than other colours as the lighting changes - I want to use this property in my photography. I've already made one image which seems very metameric - it's interesting as it means you can hide or reveal other pictures within an image as the light changes. ;) Any help or advice would be much appreciated, thanks!!

In the few times I've dealt with this effect, I have been lighting cool and painting warm, or vice-versa. I have also used pastel colors, as the shift to different color reflections isn't so mush of a jump. I used this technique to paint a backdrop for a performance a few years ago; a light lemon-yellow sky was either day under a yellow light, or a bluish green under the "night" lights. It's more in the spectrum and intensity of the lighting you shine on it, though. Another painting-based idea is to look for paints with this effect mixed into them. I know....Strathmore? I think it was Strathmore....had a set of paints they called "Interference" colors that had a reflective color mixed into them that would react wildly different to different light. Also....why not play with engine oil? Crude-derived engine products have such a lovely sheen to them.
