How can I shoot my short film in a different aspect ratio?

Question about widescreen ratio and standard ratio in film?

  • why are some films photographed in a widescreen aspect ratio cropped down to a standard aspect ratio and what are the implications of this practice?

  • Answer:

A standard movie format is 2.35:1 which is really wide. Typical "widescreen" TV's are 16:9 which is a lot more square. The implications of cropping this is that you lose the edges from a regular movie format to a "widescreen" TV format. I think optimally 16:9 works well. I don't like that they make them that wide. If you were to watch on a regular tube TV which is 4:3 aspect ratio it squeezes the picture down so short, that in order to fit the full width onto the TV, you're watching it about 1/2 height. I think 16:9 is wide enough.

Are you talking about tv or pictures? With tv, almost everything is recorded originally in wide screen now. Thats done because its what the mass trend is right now. Everyone loves this wide screen stuff. But, many movies and shows still offer a cropped version to a "regular" ratio because there is still a substantial amount of people who do not like wide screen. Anything thats cropped is going to show less. If you crop wide screen down to standard, you will be primarily cutting off information from the sides. Something originally done in standard but cropped to wide screen is going to cut information from the top and bottom. And the same thing with pictures. My digital camera has two modes... wide screen and wider screen. I wanted to enter the photography contest at my local fair, but ran into a problem. They had a strict size requirement of 8x10. I have gotten so used to the wide screen format that I actually use the whole frame. In order to use the picture I really wanted to use, I would have had to crop out a lot of material that was actually important. So much so that I didnt enter that picture because of it. Anytime you crop (especially if you are cropping from a finished project), you are cutting out information that may be important to the interpretation of the media.
