What is the most annoying business lingo?

I don't understand photography lingo?

  • I'm a 16 year old amateur photographer...and I just don't get the talk! It seems whenever I try to ask for help on here, all I seem to get are the "big shot ive been doing this for 30 years we don't want you in our business" kind of guys ...just down talking me as if i'm stupid :( I'm starting a BTEC Introductory course in Photography & Design next year, but i'm REALLY scared. looking through questions on here and reading the answers, ive come to realise how little i know about the lingo :/ is this going to get better or is this something i need to know before the course? its just all so confusing to me. Thank you to anyone who answers!<3 BQ: Want to give me a little advice/comment/critisism on these photo's? ...:) it would mean a lot. Warning being, please don't be too harsh. ALL of these photo's were (much to my sadness) taken on a phone camera. Not out of choice, but to the fact I cannot afford a camera yet. Christmas is coming and i'm hoping as hard as i can! :P Thanks guys <3 x http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2010/304/d/a/drowning_in_sorrow_by_shimmyshake0-d31wjzk.jpg http://shimmyshake0.deviantart.com/#/d3280e5 http://shimmyshake0.deviantart.com/#/d3398ft http://shimmyshake0.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d32hj6w *crosses my fingers hoping they aren't too bad*

As soon as I clicked on your link, I remembered you from a few days ago. Here is a link to a previous question: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AoVZTj5Io6NRYac5wovhFwvty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20101116173957AA56vlX There are five answers altogether. Three are gushing teenagers who probably know nothing about the craft. One is from a smarty pants who does make a remark about photos of tennis shoes, and he has a point, although he offers nothing constructive at all. The other is my own answer, which I took a few minutes to type and think about what I wanted to say. I notice you did not bother to pick a best and that question went to vote, so I guess no one had anything to say that meant something to you, constructive or otherwise. But I did not notice that anyone said they did not want you "in our business", whatever that means. You may have asked about these same pictures again, I haven't noticed. I have to wonder what you might consider to be too harsh or rude. How many times have you asked for help? How many links to good websites did you get? Or how many suggestions to either take a class or visit the library for some books on the basics? These are always things I like to mention, and I am sure the regulars get tired of seeing me repeat the same old advice over and over. The question remains, what are you doing to advance your understanding of the lingo? Photography ain't brain surgery, although it has somewhat technical aspects as well as artistic. You are taking a good first step by taking a class. But you can begin to learn the terms on your own. It will be harder to grasp how things like ISO, aperture and shutter speed affect your image if you don't have a real camera. A phone is not the greatest learning tool for photography. But if you are of normal intelligence, you can begin to learn what they are, even if you cannot yet experiment. Or you can feel put upon and have a nice little pity party. If you study much in any art, you will need to learn how to accept constructive criticism, and sometimes it can be harsh. I have already left a few comments /critique in the previous question, (not harsh, thank you!) and you can visit and read them if you haven't already. Now get out there and begin learning. I hope Santa will leave you a nice little camera under the tree!

I'd like for you to google Freud's defense mechanisms. No one is calling you stupid. You are convincing yourself they are so that you don't have to be the one with the responsibility to learn the technical terms. The photos aren't that bad. As you've noticed, I'm sure there are some technical problems with them. Some are too bright or too dark in the wrong places. There is some blurriness happening. And the art value isn't the best that it can be. But you are going to school to learn. And if you do the work and make the effort you will learn. I'm afraid you are not stupid but another causality of the 90's. Everyone told you that you are a superstar in everything you do. So when you actually don't know something, which happens in real life, you panic and feel stupid. here's a lesson from the trenches, you are not a super star, you will never be extraordinary and you will die a little death after living a little life just like the rest of us. It is your duty to yourself to learn and explore and know everything you can in the next 50 years. If you feel unknowledgeable about something the only course of action I see is to become knowledgeable about it. Walking around telling everyone you suck is the only thing that will ever make you suck.

Good photography means having the knack. You either have the knack or you don't, cell phone, Nikon D3, or otherwise. Meanwhile, there's lots of lingo. Here are the big three: 1) ISO= the cameras sensitivity to light. The higher the number, the more sensitive it is to light. 2) Shutter Speed = how fast are we capturing a picture? A fast shutter speed (like 1/1000 second) will freeze the motion of a moving object. A slow shutter speed (1/4 second) will allow a moving object to be blurred in the picture. 3) f-stop = (called "Aperture" these days) is like the pupil in your eye. It opens when it's dark, closes down when it's bright. When of if you get a handle on these three things, all the rest is gravy (as long as you have the knack).

Nobody understands photography lingo when they are first starting out, that's why you are TAKING A CLASS (or in my case, I picked it up by reading my manual and photography books). I don't understand why you are scared of an introductory class. the key word is introductory. If you aren't getting helpful answers, then maybe you are not asking good questions. Personally, whenever I browse the questions on Y!A, most of what I see are snot-nosed punks and lazy bums who don't like to figure anything out for themselves and just expect the internet community to hand them all the information on a silver platter - that's hella annoying. I can't tell you how many questions can be answered by simply reading the camera manual (you may say "well, duh", but you'll be surprised what little common sense exists around here). I still do not know all the lingo, but it doesn't matter for my purposes. I can still take pictures.
