Can (film) tracking create an illusion of depth?

it's for my fourth period class.... for those of you who don't know, tracking (dolly) shots are when a camera is placed on a rail and moved around giving the illusion of movement such as running in first person, being chased, or looking out the window from the viewers eyes.
