How do I string paper lanterns overhead?

How can I use paper lanterns for lighting in a film?

  • I'm starting production on my next short film pretty soon and to improve the cinematography a little bit I'm planning on adding some lights. But to stay within budget, I'm using Chinese/paper lanterns like the one seen here (http://www.amazon.com/White-Chinese-Japanese-Lantern-Diameter/dp/B0026XWXC2/ref=pd_bxgy_hi_img_c), which I hear work relatively well. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about Chinese lanterns-- I do not know about proper bulbs or power cords, or even if the one in the link provided is the right kind of lantern for what I'm looking for. Will a regular 40 watt light bulb work? Totally clueless. So! If you could include any and every detail about Chinese/paper lanterns and the technique I plan to employ, I'd be very grateful. 10 easy points.

  • Answer:

Photography is not a cut n dried science. Lighting IS the most largest and critical variable here.. Using the light source you want will depend on a few factors.. . How many lights will you be using. ? . Any other lighting..? . How sensitive to low light is your video equipment..? . 40 watt bulbs are rather dim, even a string of them. Try using 100W bright white screw in fluorescents. They give off almost no heat, wont burn the paper lamps and if all the lamps have the same bulbs and you do a white light balance with them, all should be good..

Unless you have a very fast lens (for example, in the movie Barry Lyndon, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Lyndon#Cinematography ), that lamp is too dim. The first answer is quite right - but will it look natural if it's so bright? This shot was illuminated with the candles on the cake. At high ISO, it can be cleaned up. This is a still photo and isn't quite the same as a film. (Are you using photography film, or will it be video?) http://www.flickr.com/photos/little_pooky/2801630045/in/photostream
