Do i need to sign something when a model uses my photography?
-
I am a photographer I recently started doing portraits and one of my models wants to use my photography in her portfolio and to help her get other jobs. I know if I want to use that picture I have to have a model's release form allowing me to use her photo. I was wondering if she needs to have me sign something saying that that is my photography and she has my permission to use it. PLEASE HELP ME!!! :D P.S. Like Tara T Photography on Facebook!! <3

Answer:
What you need is a model release signed by the model which allows you to use their images for self promotion. Within that release, you can also grant them to use your images for self promotion as well. These are called TFP releases, Time For Print. If they need prints, you will have to have a Permission To Print letter from you stating that they can have prints made without hassles. Include their name, your name, your email address and your phone number. If you would like, send me an email and I will send you samples of each document

A release is a contract between the model and the photographer that does several things: 1. It documents the terms of the agreement under which the photographer was allowed to photograph the model. 2. It documents the the purposes for which the photographer can use the photographs. More specifically, absent anything specific limitations in the release, the presumption is that the photographer can use the photographs for any purpose, and the model may want to impose some constraints on the uses that the photographer can choose. 3. It documents the payment that the model will receive in return for being photographed. In some instances, that payment may be images (either prints or digital files), and if so, the photographer may want to impose constraints on how the model can use those images. It's always a good idea to ask for a release. If the model is a minor, then I would think a release (signed by a parent or guardian) would be mandatory. Likewise, if the model is nude, I would always want a release and would include language indicating the model acknowledges that the photographer acted professionally during the photography. While the photographer may sign the release, it is critical that it be signed by the model.
