Tips for taking photo's of a car?

  • I am going to be taking some photo's of a freinds car this weekend. The photo is for them to use when placing and advertisement when selling their car. If anyone knows any tricks of the trade or just good advice for taking this type of shot. Thanks a lot ;) P.S. I have a fujifinepix s5700 7.1MP

  • Answer:

-- Clean the car thoroughly inside and out and shoot everything. Don't forget the driver's side interior, including the floor mats and pedals. This is where people look for wear and tear. Also clean off the tire treads -- mud and gunk look ugly. -- Pick a nice location -- a park is perfect. Make sure there's no litter around the car or distracting background. -- Put the car in the shade or wait for clouds to roll in. This makes the paint look more saturated, reduces glare and softens harsh shadows -- Wet the car down with a hose -- makes it look shiny and new. Wet the ground around it as well so it doesn't look hokey. If you can't do that (winter) at least get it washed. -- Take 3/4 views. That means, point the camera at the corners of the car. -- A low angle makes the car look more aggressive. -- If you can, shoot the interior without flash. You'll avoid glaring hot spots and overexposure. Hope this helps.

A wide angle lens close and low gives the car a bigger look. Try to get as plain a background as possible. Edited to add: http://www.flickr.com/photos/perki88/2225485183/

The best view i would say is diagonaly from top view or prehapse from the ground so the car rises up and it being the only thing (apart from the ground) in the picture. I can see that with a nice ute. Red =) Mmmm.. shiny red ute! Drool. Xx peace xX

take several shots from all angles... and you may want to stand back and zoom in, instead of being up close and using a wide angle, try both so there will be some choices in the matter

Lights on. Take pic from a front angle, and make sure car is wet. Just washed, and use flash.

Here's an example - not necessarily good - of a car photo. This is what it will look like with a wide angle lens. You decide if that's what you want. The good thing here is that there is something in the background so you are not distracted by something else off in the distance. Putting the car near a building might be a good idea to help accomplish this. If you can, wet down the pavement to make it look dark and shiny. It will pick up a few reflections of the car and just looks cool in general. http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstein/899705078/

low down at the front, but slightly to the left, turn the wheels to the right the car will look big, powerful and stylish What kind of car is it anyway? Tom

Hmmm, my advice, bring a tripod, and set long( enough to get good lighting) and use noflash. You will get proper lighting using long exposures, and not have a glare on the car. Try different angles and see which you think makes te car look best. Oh by the way, an alternative to long exposures would be to set the ISO high, this will allow more light witout a possible glare from flash. Good luck

make sure that the care is clean. hopefully you have good sun. if the paint is in poor condition--park under florescent lights(i.e. gas station)--use angles (front right or left). avoid people in the picture and don't have a cluttered background.
