How Does Light Graffiti Work?

Will my camera work for light graffiti?

  • I have an HP Photosmart M547. If it will work, can you please tell me what settings I should put it on??? If it won't work, can you give me some ideas of cameras that are FAIRLY inexpensive??? Thanks!!!

  • Answer:

You need to put it onto a "fireworks" or "night" setting for it to have any chance of it working because these settings decrease the shutter speed and turns off the the flash. If those don't work may I suggest you opt for a camera such as the Canon S5 IS which is still a "point and shoot" but takes great pictures. Any olympus (over 7mp) is also good because they have quite a range of extremely effective shooting modes. Hope this helps.

If you mean light painting, you need to be able to leave your shutter open. Check your manual, but I dont think HP makes one that can do that. To find one, go to dpreview.com, and search for cameras that offer shutter speeds measured in seconds, ie., 10+, or has a "bulb" setting for shutter speed. Edit: Checking the specs sheet for your camera on the HP website, shows that there are no manual settings that will hold your shutter open for as long you need it. Night portrait will change settings ISO, EV, and exposure settings, but wont leave your shutter open. http://www.shopping.hp.com/store/product/product_detail/L2461A%2523ABA Try http://www.bhphotovideo.com, search for advanced digital cameras, and see what you find in your price limits. They are basically high end point and shoots, but you get more control with manual settings, and even off camera flash use (with slave units), but no extra lens use. While there, checkout Digital SLR's too.

If it has a firework, or night time setting, the camera should then set itself to 6 or more sec. of exposure and it works really well for light grafitti I have a Casio EX-Z700, and it works great for those kinds of things Good luck!
