How to shoot good film photography?
-
I just started a photo class--our 1st assgn is next week. Its a film class not digital. I'd ask this question whether its about digital or film--but how can i shoot better pictures. I live in a boring state in an even more boring city. There is nothing interesting, no one interesting.

I bet I could find a lot of interesting things to shoot in your town. Look for buildings with old, faded signs painted on them. You might have to walk the alleys behind them but I bet you can find some. Next week or next month or next year the owner of the building might decide to paint over that faded old sign and it will be lost forever. Look for old buildings in general. Investigate what the building meant in your town's past. Find pictures of it (if possible) when it played an important role in your town. It might have been the first movie theatre or a place where your grandparents hung out at your age. Photograph the main business district at 7am, 8am, 9am and then at 4pm, 5pm, 6pm. Different lighting at different times of day and the area opening up and then shutting down. Look for interesting signs painted on shop windows. Hand-printed signs on the window of a diner advertising the day's special or signs that are specific to the business, like a dragon or tiger on a judo studio or dancers on the window of a dance studio. Photograph the local junkyard. Every vehicle there was once the object of someone's dreams. In black & white the contrast between rusted surfaces and painted ones can be interesting. Maybe you could find pictures of a new Mustang or Camaro to dispaly with your pictures of a wrecked one. That decrepid old station wagon was once the family transportation of choice before the minivan. So get out there and look at your town with fresh eyes. Look at it as though you've never seen it before.

Go to a hospital, get a permission and you may be able to shoot very interesting ones there.
I'm sure you can find something intresting if you look hard enough, and I'd take pics of a hospital at night. don't take pic's of people.

Look harder. You're bound to find something interesting, or at least something you can make interesting; use some creativity... if all else fails there's always macro photography (textures can be fascinating when seen up close!). And BTW I've known of photographers whose subjects are mundane, every day objects and sceneries. So quit worrying so much about subject, and more about getting good shots. The art of photography is far too broad for us to sum it up in a few sentences, so do some research; learn how to use compositional techniques and how lighting works, and look up some photography tips (use these as a general guide line though, nothing wrong with breaking photography "rules" to achieve a desired effect... for example, my photography teacher keeps stressing to me to use the 'rule of thirds', though I can think of many situations which placing the subject centre in the photo produces a better effect, in my opinion).

no matter how boring a place..theres always interesting people..try people photography..that way theres always plenty of subjects and it can be very rewarding. Sometimes if I sit still in one place in public for long enough images become a lot more easy to spot.
