What are some good Chinese photographers?

Calling all photographers: What is a good camera--photography?

  • So I love photography.. well looking at it anyways. I want to take good pics like the one's on the Urban Outfitters site and http://www.flickr.com/groups/79323077@N00/pool/show/ I really like the vintagey, natural, airy (idk), look of it all. I have an hp Photosmart M547 --yea I'm kindof a novice hhehe. Anyways, I can't get the same effect unless I use photoshop or something like that.... Anyways, I want to hear your advice on a good camera which isn't too costly and produces photos with qualities that I mentioned earlier. Thanks :D

Having looked and read your question and understood it I can answer your question for you. From a professional photographers point of view the images are a little bit of a mix, there is SLR and 35mm fix Film cameras that have been used within the full image set, and there are also a few digital images. It does not mean that there has not been some photo editing carried out on the images that have been scanned. Why I say Film... Looking at Film images and Digital Images there is a massive shortfall in Digital imaging of about 600% over film. With Digital camera's being used widely today, most people cannot remember what film images actually look like and the difference in the picture quality and detail. This is known as the dynamic range. You can spot the difference between a Digital image and a Film image by how much detail is retained in both the high and low light areas of the photo's. This is know as dynamic range. If you wanted images like this you will not get it from a consumer camera even a mid/low cost Digital SLR camera. 35mm Fixed. If you look at the images, you will notice the way that they are framed, you will also see that they are slightly out of focus and this is even across the picture. This is common with Fixed lens cameras. Film used in general most cameras today will select the correct lighting or what is called white balance, older cameras don't do this and this is why there are hue's in the colours in the image selection. The images. in general the images are snaps, some are good imo as they are showing points, details or just capturing a memory or a life moment, some are just bad, but these images (most) are NOT taken as professional meet all standards and technical detail images, Some are and I can see the difference between them. the posing Its natural, candid and fun, the natural hue's poor positioning and soft focus and indirect capture of both detail and moments really add to the images. There is a clear mix of photography styles so there has been a few photographers that have taken the images in that page. It is almost like students gallery with a few friends photos put in as well. Digital work. There has been digital work on the images, with vector map ageing layers, someone has downloaded these overlays and adjustment layers to add age to the images and create that look. You can good plugin's for photo shop or your image editing software. Try a Film camera, you can pick up film cameras for little money these days and then go out and try, its a learning curve but it can be fun when you only get to see your pictures when they have been developed. You may want to buy a vintage camera to take vintage pictures, but do remember that they way they are developed these days will make a difference, you can find specialist developers that will give you that vintage look, you also can take your own developing course and do it yourself..

No digital camera is going to work well without photoshop (or some editing). Nothing straight from the camera is worth using. The effects in the flicker images are well lit and shot, but you can't get them in camera. With digital, half of the work is in the computer, just like in film days half the work was in the darkroom. No camera will do the full job of completing the image, thats your job. If you want camera reviews look at http://www.dpreview.com/ Look at the reviews in your price range and read the forums associated with that model to see if it will work for you. Your HP will get you started, the next stepup in camera Quality starts around $300 (I like the Lumix DMC-Z series), but you are buying a bigger and better lens at that price point. There is little point in trading between one inexpensive camera to another, they are all pretty decent and you can learn the basics on anyone of them, but cameras are about the glass the light goes through, the smaller the lens, the harder it is to get great shots. That said a great photographer with a bad camera will make great photographs.

The camera has ZERO to do with these. It's about understanding what you are doing. These can be pulled off with an Iphone if you know what you are doing. People need to understand that better cameras do not equate to better pictures. I would suggest learning how to properly take pictures first.

Ok. By looking at them, it seems that an ordinary P&S/Compact will do you. IMO, there was nothing that had the WOW factor. Sorry, but I do not share your enthusiasm for the photos. I have seen much better.

Based on the link you provided, the photos are not great. They/you needs to work on the lighting of the subjects in the photographs. If you want a good camera to start off with? You thinking of a DSLR or a point and shoot? I recommend the Nikon D3000 kit. http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Nikon_D3000/ Good Luck

I have to agree with the people who say, "It's not about the cameras used in these photos. It's about the subjects and the techniques." The one technique which you MAY need a better camera to achieve is shallow depth of field, where the subject is in focus, but the background is not. Here is a site that reviews cameras and lists them according to price: http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/?tag=leftColumnArea.0

unfortunately you need flashplayer to see the site (I don't have it)
