What is the best way to make eyes sparkles in photos?

  • I'm currently working on a photo project for class in which we pick a photographer want to mimic. I have yet to figure out how to make the eyes of my subjects sparkle in the same manner as my photographer. The photo I'm currently working on has her eyes sparkling so much that you can see what looks like the outline of trees clearly against her pupil and iris. I'd link it, but his website doesn't allow it, and it's in a video. Do I need a studio to get that kind of look? Or is it simple enough to find a way of getting lights to reflect in her eyes? Or sunlight?

    If you see trees the shot was probably taken outside. Take your subject to a shaded area and stand with your back to open sun. be careful not to stand directly in front of the person and use a tripod if possible for a nice sharp image. Use a fill flash or white board to kick some light into their face if needed.

the position of studio lights may create that effect, but the eyes could also have been photoshopped after the photo was taken. i've done alot of studio photography in the past couple months, and even though i use a studio i still touch up the eyes afterwards, adjusting the color slightly and the catch lights to make them look more intense. you could try using the sun to mimick it, but shooting outdoors in the sun can create some not so great conditions. if possible, i'd try using studio lights so that you could have more control over the position and the intensity of the lighting, and if not, play around in photoshop and see if you can't recreate the lighting using it's tools.

Not necessarily: you can get just as good an effect if not better by using a reflector and / or fill-in flash. Another tip to get eyes sparkling is to use a touch of selective sharpening in post production... don't over light them or you will narrow the pupils... ;)
