The great thing about the Powershot line is there's free software that lets you take time-lapse shots at set intervals and even leave the shutter open longer than normal (which answers another question you posted). This software is called CHDK and I've put a link to the alpha version of the SX40's software below. You can either try working with the alpha version or wait for someone to make a more stable beta version. I'm also including an article I wrote about installing CHDK on my Powershot and one about installing a time-lapse program. Good luck and feel free to leave a comment if you need any help.
