One basic technique is to start with a color picture and then create a selection around the object to stay colored. Then invert the selection and remove the color from this inverse selection. This is a tutorial with example for Photoshop http://digital-photography.suite101.com/article.cfm/color_in_black_white_photos the Gimp is free editing software similar to Photoshop that uses the same basic method http://digital-photography.suite101.com/article.cfm/imaging_software_the_gimp

First open the image in your editing suite, then change the saturation until the image is monochromatic. Then take a splash of paint and sling it on your computer screen, a la Pollock, and there you have it. A black and white image and a splash of color on your computer.

go to picnik.com sign up, its free, works great, I have no regrets. after uploading a photo, go to create, click black and white then select brush size. when you get a good brush size, small is better than large in case you mess up, click on the picture where you want color.

Here is ONE way: http://tutorials.watchandlearnphotoshop.com/tutorials/ps/redblackwhiterd.html But the answer is MOOT if you don't have Photoshop. So you should really formulate your questions better (like what software do you have) AND .... Do a little google search before like the guys above says. Good luck...

just lower the saturation down to zero. and then erase the parts that you want to bring back to color. This is what I do in photoshop...its the easiest way.
