How much should I charge for prints?
-
I am doing a photoshoot for a Christmas party. Their idea was to pay me a flat rate for the night and then I could put the photos on my website. The members of their company could then contact me and order whatever pictures they wanted, out of their own pocket. But my problem is I have no idea how much to charge for something like this? Any ideas?

Answer:
Depends on your experience and your effort. I'd go with 200-300 bucks for the night and the upload service, depending on what you're comfortable with.

Just some numbers that colleagues of mine use for such services $14.99 for 8x10 inch $ 5.99 for 5x7 inch $ 2.49 for 4x6 inch. You will also need to include local taxes and shipping costs If you start doing this on a regular basis, you may want to establish an account with a website like smugmug. Clients can order on line, the lab fulfills all the orders and smugmug collects the money and deposits it into your checking account

I believe the best pricing would be only like $.25 to.50 profit over your cost of production per print. Face it, you can put all the copyright notices but people will home scan and reprint at will. If you charge minimal you will get the repeat orders. If not people will only order 1 or not even just copy it off of their print screen and make their own, then you get little to nothing. People (other than photographers) look and say "what? $9 for a freaking photograph! I can take a picture with my digital camera or phone for free." Sure they do not print it up, and it doesn't look as good but it does the same thing. Remind them of the night. Photographers can be as artistic as they want, but it is really wasted on the masses who know that it won't be hanging in a 25"x40" frame at their home where they will stare at it for hours. They will glance at it for 3 seconds tops. So they want to spend the least amount on it. And they can get it printed at the local drugstore for about $.05 a piece for a 5x7. As a consumer that is the path I take. Reduced quality but a lot less on price. We have done this many times. My son takes 1 soccer photo. We by a cheap 5x7. We go home photoshop it, blow it up, and now we have our own collection.

If you let them buy off your site you may need help setting for the first run. You want to put a notice across the face so when the print it comes out copy right or what ever you put to protect yourself. So if the pay it takes them to a different photo that does not have anything across face.

Go to a Kinko's or CVS that let's people print their photos at their machines and see what they charge.
