What's a good rate to charge photographers for a shoot?
-
I'm a new model and I have had a few photographers ask me what are my charges for the shoot? I'm not sure what to say back because I'm doing quite a few TFP work, so what would be a good rate to charge?

Answer:
It will depend on alot of things but insure you can cover your own costs for the shoot and then everything else will depend on the subject. You will of course charge more per hour for a nude shoot when compared for a non nude shoot and more for porn (not making any judgement calls here) than for a nude. Make sure that you are paid for the entire time you are there ... none of this "ok so I'll be shooting with you for 15 minutes but I need you there from noon to 5pm to get ready, make up, hair ... you know, and then you'll wait while I shoot the other girls." Yeah ... you get paid from the moment you are asked to show up to the moment you are done.

There are way too many variable that you haven't answered. If you have fashion stats (5'9" to 6'1", size 1 to 3) and a good look and are 17-20 years old, you should probably get agency representation and let them handle bookings/rates for fashion and commercial shoots. With a little luck, you might get some good gigs. If you don't have fashion stats, then you better have a glamor build/look if you'd like to get paid. That also means bikini at a minimum, and more likely topless/nude to get paid. Most of your paid gigs (if any) will come from amateur photographers if you won't go nude. If you go nude, then you should be able to get some professional gigs. If you look good enough and persevere, you can probably make a goodish living. That means enough to get by. But very, very few models, including nude ones, are ever going to get rich. This might sound harsh, but it is reality. Not every girl gets to become a paid model just like every boy doesn't get to become a paid baseball player. If you don't have the right look/stats, and aren't willing to get nude, you'll probably not be able to get paid gigs.

Start with just having your travel expenses paid for by the 'tog, with the actual photoshoot still being TFP. Beyond that consider it to be similar to any other low skill job (i'm not saying that it's something everyone could do, but you didn't require any formal training to do it), and that you likely won't pay taxes on it. So $10-15 per hour would be ok. I'm not an expert on shooting people though (i do landscape and architecture), this is just my common sense estimation.

I think $10-15 an hour seems reasonable. If I was a fashion photographer hiring a new model I would be willing to pay that.
