How to send photos taken by camera?

Why do photos taken with an SLR camera look so differerent from those taken with a non-SLR?

  • I know this question may sound rather elementary and ignorant, but I am wondering what is so special about an SLR that makes photos taken with it look so much better than those taken with a regular point-and-shoot digital camera that has the same mega-pixels.... And I mean photos taken with an SLR and NO special lens attached.

  • Answer:

DSLRs, when in the right hands, have a lot of good points. First of all, their sensors are MUCH larger than a point-and-shoot camera. This leads to more adaptability with lighting, and when using manual settings (which is a must with DSLRs!) you can reduce the amount of "noise" in the image. Manual settings, as I mentioned, are essential. The settings allow you to make changes in what the camera is doing in taking the image, and therefore, an experienced user has much more control over the outcome. As for "NO special lens," that's a difficult point...because a DSLR must have a lens attached. You can't take a photo with the camera body; it has to have a lens, and I don't know where you're drawing the line when it comes to "special." Overall, DSLRs have a better depth of field, less noise, and more adjustability. I should add, however, that there's one other factor...the people that own SLRs generally use manual settings, while point-and-shoot users generally use auto settings. While some point and shoot cameras have manual settings, they are not as advanced as those of an SLR in terms of the range of options, and often not as effective. Therefore, as most SLR users are "customizing" their photos more, those that know what they're doing can produce fantastic images. Look at it this way -- it's not that an SLR creates great images. It's that it's a great TOOL for creating great images.

dSLR cameras have sensors that are over 15 times larger than a P&S camera. This means that the pixels are much larger than those on a P&S so can gather more light per pixel and generate less noise. The lenses made for dSLR's are much higher quality than those on most P&S cameras Finally, the user of a dSLR has much more control over the exposure, lens choice and white balance than any P&S camera Typically, those who shoot with dSLR cameras have some experience shooting film, so their exposure of the image is closer to perfect than letting the camera decide for you (P&S cameras)

The main difference is the manual operation, lens, and lighting. Most point and shoot cameras utilize direct harsh flash. SLR's utilize manual settings, aperture, shutter speeds, ISO, etc. Point and shoot cameras are not created for sharp focus and bokeh (the blurring of the background due to a wide aperture)
