This is as good a place as any to gather information. There are several advanced amateurs and professional photographers here. You are right in thinking that professionals would pick gear to suit a specific shooting style. A photojournalist requires a fast standard zoom; A sports photographer requires a high FPS rate and fast tele-lenses (aperture and auto-focus); A portrait photographer requires great color rendition and a mild telephoto lens with a very large aperture; A landscape photographer requires wide angle lenses and a large negative/ sensor. Many cameras can do all of these things fairly well, but no single camera + lens excels at everything. Also consider that professional level digital bodies start at $2500 and professional level zoom lenses start at $1000. If you're looking for a great all rounder for under $1500, you could consider the Nikon D90 with the 18-105mm kit lens or the Canon Rebel XSi with the 17-85mm zoom. Either combination will leave you with some spare cash to put towards a second lens. If you have a specific use in mind, tell us what and we'll tailor our suggestions. (Perhaps you'd be better off looking for used gear or a (medium format) film camera. Perhaps we can suggest a lens that would suit you perfectly...)

Please be reminded that most professional photographers often "rent" expensive cameras in order to fulfill a particular photo assignment. So the pros do not spend $1,000-1,500 to purchase cameras since with changing camera technology they do not want to be stuck with having to update their cameras with ever changing upgrades. And besides, "rental" fees are tax deductible whereas a camera purchase is not! Good luck!

Ponies did a good job summarizing the needs of each type. Digital SLR is required for photojournalist and sports photographer due to the need for automatic controls and the ability to send the photograph to the agency very quickly. For landscape: A rangefinder is the best kind. Since there is no mirror, the lens can retract much further, making it much easier to have a wide angle. SLR wide angle lenses are large and expensive. Due to the wide angle and resulting huge depth of field, you don't even have to focus often. Zeiss Ikon SW and Voigtlander Bessa R4A are both good choices. Both Carl Zeiss and Voigtlander make several awesome wide angle lenses. Both are film cameras, however, it's best to stick to film (and slide film at that) here, due to the better detail and colors. The results from a film like Velvia or Kodachrome will trounce any digital. If you get a fixed focal length lens as opposed to a zoom, you will get a slightly better picture as zoom lenses sacrifice a wee bit of quality to be able to zoom. A wide aperature creates a small depth of field helps you seperate the subject from the background. See here: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3273/3066398762_5ea4cd27aa.jpg
