How to send photos taken by camera?

How can I determine if two photos were taken with the same camera?

  • My friend camera was stolen, he suspect someone that lives nearby his house, just recently he has received a photo taken by that person; the style of the photo was very familiar, so he took a look to the photo properties and guess what? the photo was taken with the same model as his stolen camera; he wonders if its possible to be 100% sure that the photo was taken with his camera. Is there any way to do this? can you explain me how? Thanks :)

  • Answer:

If he has images taken with the camera, depening on the model most record the serial # into the image exif data. So if he can get an original image from the person he suspects that exif data can be compared to see if they match. Sometimes you need speci8al software to do that. If its an Olympus, he can email olympus with the model # and they can tell him if and how he can do it. Photoshop CS2 or CS3 should also give that info. Thats part of the big brother is watching you ideal that the USA and many other countries are doing so they can track a person by a purchase and the use of the item. Hope this helps. If you look at the photo properties it might show there, otherwise in photoshop look at File Info. And then look in each field for the info and compare it. Take care and good Luck

All you have to do is look at the metadata embedded in each file using this free program. http://www.opanda.com/en/iexif/download.htm With OPanda, when you open a file using it, you will see all the data that the camera recorded as well as the name of the program that may have been used to manipulate the file I just checked a recent image file and it does not show the serial number of my camera. However, I have unique prefixes on my file names as well as my copyright notice, email address and telephone number embedded in my files. Unless your cameras has the feature where you can embed a user comment or copyright notice, you may have some problems making your case. Did you register the camera with the camera company? Did you make a police report of the theft?

The data embeded into the file should show you the serial number of the camera (with mine, the lens, too). What OS (operating system) are you using? For Windows, right click the file and see what you can view.

look for the EXIF data under jpg file description. right click file.. godd luck.

If it is a digital camera, it may be embedding EXIF information into the photo. Here is an example of what can be stored: File: - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Pictures\xxxxxxx\ IMG_0030 .JPG Make - Canon Model - Canon PowerShot S1 IS Orientation - Top left XResolution - 180 YResolution - 180 ResolutionUnit - Inch DateTime - 2005:08:17 20:59:43 YCbCrPositioning - Centered ExifOffset - 196 ExposureTime - 1/60 seconds FNumber - 2 .80 ExifVersion - 220 DateTimeOriginal - 2005:08:17 20:59:43 DateTimeDigitized - 2005:08:17 20:59:43 ComponentsConfiguration - YCbCr CompressedBitsPerPixel - 3 (bits/pixel) ShutterSpeedValue - 1/60 seconds ApertureValue - F 2 .80 ExposureBiasValue - 0 .00 MaxApertureValue - F 2 .80 MeteringMode - Multi-segment Flash - Flash fired, auto mode, red-eye reduction mode FocalLength - 5 .80 mm UserComment - FlashPixVersion - 100 ColorSpace - sRGB ExifImageWidth - 2048 ExifImageHeight - 1536 InteroperabilityOffset - 2036 FocalPlaneXResolution - 9846 .15 FocalPlaneYResolution - 9846 .15 FocalPlaneResolutionUnit - Inch SensingMethod - One-chip color area sensor FileSource - DSC - Digital still camera CustomRendered - Normal process ExposureMode - Auto WhiteBalance - Auto DigitalZoomRatio - 1 .00 x SceneCaptureType - Standard Maker Note (Vendor): - Macro mode - Normal Self timer - Off Quality - Fine Flash mode - Auto + red-eye reduction Sequence mode - Single or Timer Focus mode - Single Image size - Large Easy shooting mode - Full Auto Digital zoom - None Contrast - Normal Saturation - Normal Sharpness - Normal ISO Value - Auto Metering mode - Evaluative Focus type - Auto AF point selected - Exposure mode - Easy shooting Focal length - 5800 - 58000 mm Flash activity - Fired Sequence number - 0 White Balance - Auto Image Type - IMG:PowerShot S1 IS JPEG Firmware Version - Firmware Version 1 .02 Image Number - 1000030 Owner Name - This information is from a picture taken with one of my cameras; the information varies from model to model, but there is quite a bit of detail, some of which can identify the camera's owner. However, the EXIF information is sometimes stripped when an image is transformed in some way, and there's nothing you can do with a print. As Poppet suggested in her comment, some forensic analysis might be able to determine if two pictures came from the same camera, because of imperfections in the lens or CCD, for example.
