How do I get into professional [freelance] sports photography?

What camera settings are optimum to get better Sports Photography photos at hockey games?

  • I have a Nikon Coolpix L120 14.1-megapixel digital camera with 21X optical zoom, and I get quite a few pretty good photos from every event. But there tends to be a lot of noise in the photos. Is there anything I can do, short of buying software, to get better photos?

  • Answer:

Since the L120 doesn't have manual controls, there isn't much you can do other than crank up your ISO - Buying computer software won't help you take better photos, obviously, but software can help reduce the amount of noise is your photos.

Shooting sports successfully requires some things your P&S camera does not have. A fast lens (f/2.8) The ability to shoot in the manual mode and set your shutter speed to 1/500th second or faster. You can use high ISO settings to fool the camera into shooting at high shutter speeds, but you will have to remove any noise in post. What you also need to do is set the cameras white balance to match the lighting in the arena While you may be somewhat successful, until you can buy a dSLR with a sensor that is 15 times larger than a P&S camera and has a sensor that performs well under low light, you really will have to put up with the noise. The $300 Adobe Lightroom can reduce the noise in photos to some extent, but you don't want to invest in such a program.

Why not use MANUAL.. and understand the photographic process on what DOES it take to get good action shots than rely on a "automatic setting" and not know or learn a dam thing....?! And I'm sure your 14.1 Mp and 21x zoom really helps.....(But there tends to be a lot of noise in the photos) .. not..! ISO on automatic too..??

Sorry but you need a better camera. Once you have a better camera, set your shutter to at least 1/500 sec or more and then raise your ISO until you get an exposure. It's hard because you are shooting under low light.
