The qualifications to be a Professional photographer?

What qualifications are needed to be a fashion photographer?

  • At A-Level I'm thinking of taking Textiles, Psychology and Business Studies (haven't decided on my 4th choice) The college I want to go doesn't do a photography course, but do I need a qualification in photography to do fashion photography? Because I was thinking of just taking classes outside of school to learning about photography and lighting etc. I don't really want to go to any other colleges as I visited them and I just don't get the same feeling I got when I walked into the college I want to go to and I feel like I would receive a lot more help and guidance from this college I want to go to. Also what are some skills that would be useful and relevant to become a fashion photographer?

  • Answer:

Other than being one with your camera so you do not have to spend a lot of time trying to figure out what balance of ISO, shutter speed and lens aperture you need when shooting fashion in the studio or on location, here are the additional skills you need * A vast background in using lighting to enhance the look of clothing the model is wearing, capturing the intent of the designer. * Experience in directing models to get the best poses and looks possible NOTE: When shooting textiles, it is important that the pigments of the material match the image exactly. To do this you will have to establish a custom white balance for each lighting situation you are shooting. I use Xrite Colorchecker Passport. There are other tools available. * It is also very important that your computers monitor has be recently calibrated and profiled

At first you should know some technical studies about photography . for example : what is shutter speed , how to work with flash and ...etc , and after all of them you must know composition on photography and how to pose a model in a studio . it is a long way to be a fashion photographer .

Take serious, commendable subjects at this level. Science, business, English literature etc etc. Universities will be far more impressed with these subject qualifications and with good grades in them, you stand a much better chance of getting into your preferred college/uni.

If your work is good enouigh you can jump straight in and make money now! But that's a big IF. More than photoskills you will need people skills.

No, but they help. Look for local community colleges and take some classes there. Good luck!

You are looking at one of the most competitive areas of professional photography. To be successful in fashion photography you better love fashion and you need to be knowledgable about photography technically which you can learn in a school or by being an assistant. The most important thing is to be creative. What you need you will not learn in a university. It's already inside of you, it just needs to be brought out. Getting to the top in fashion is a challenge, you better love it.
