How do I create the effect of candlelight in a photo?

  • How do I create the effect of candlelight in a photo? I think this technique looks good for portraits or some still life. Is this accomplished through the use of lens filters, or lighting, or both? If its more lighting what is a good setup to create this effect?

  • Answer:

This is something I found out quite accidently. Go and find a cheap and short bedside lamp (with an old yellowish shade) The lamp should only be about 2' high at the most. Go to a "cheap stuff store" and buy the cheapest 60W filiment bulb (soft white is ok too) for lower light go with lower wattage. If you are using a digital camera, turn off the auto white balance if you can, if not switch it to irridescent lighting. With your subject 3' away and lower by 6-12 inches, this will simulate the morning sun very well. If you use a dimmer switch, you'll get your effect with a bit of experimentation.

Not to be a smart-*** but why not use candles? The low light means you will need a tripod and either a cable release or self-timer for the shutter.

It's called dragging the shutter. If your problem is that your flash is killing the natural lighting turn it off, use a pod, open up the shutter a stop (for reciprocity failure) and then kick in your fill-in flash at 1.5-2 stops under. Treat the background as a separate exposure and get it right first, whether you're taking a portrait or a still life, and only then (and only if you really have to) add some flash. I hope that helps / that I understood properly!

Use candles or gel a light to the same colour temperature, use a tripod, heres a candle light shot, not what your aimimg at proberly? http://www.flickr.com/photos/martini2005/2052509260/ Use 5600k or you will defeat the purpose of the exercise - thats if you want the orange glow of flame to show as orange a

Use the effect tool in Photopaint called Lightning. Itprobably has the same name in Photoshop.
