How do pixels convert to dpi?

How to I convert a web image that is 72dpi, and convert it to a nice priting size, like 300 dpi?

  • How do I take that 72dpi image, and convert it to 300 and above in Adobe Photoshop, but still have the image the same size? I need to up my image dpi for a print job, but when I print it out on my printer, it makes it small. I dont have the original image either because I grabbed it off of the web.

    It is a one way trip ... large to small. Using someone elses images, is in violation of copyright. You must always have the permission or have paid for the rights then using others work. This is one reason professionals don't mind showing their work on the Internet. The images are too small for anyone to steal or use without authorization. If the images are really something you need to use, contact the photographer and they can sell you the rights you need for a fee based upon their usage.

In photoshop menu, go to Image, Image size, and check the box that says Resample Image. Then chage the dpi to 300. This will not make the image any better for printing though. Yes, it's a higher resolution but the detial is the same as the small image. You can't create something from nothing.

I ditto the other answers that tell you that you can't. You can make some very minor adjustments in a good photo editing application, but these only "fake" an improvement in in resolution, and are not effective for any but very small adjustments, say, from 72 DPI to, maybe, 80 DPI, or so. As the person already suggested, you can't create something, like digital data, that was not already there.
