Can anyone tell me if it is necessary to have a degree to pursue a photography career.?

What I want to do is own a small photography shop for portraits and use that for a business and then do freelance on the side...
-
Answer:
You don't have to, but it can help. If you want to own your own business, getting a degree that combines business and photography might be the way to go. That way you have some time to build up your portfolio (so you can snag more freelance work) while getting your business plan together. Plus you'll make contacts in school, with professors, and can even do coop or internship work that might help you in the future. One of the best things to do is to talk to some people who are doing what you want to do. Look them up online or in the phone book and start asking questions. Try to find people who are living in the area that you will be opening up your business. You might be able to get training in other ways; if possible, you might even want to consider going to an art school - it might open you up to different types of photography while you refine your skills.

I find that technical courses for someone in a specialized field help only at the tail end of education. For instance with music production, I taught myself for years how to mix, compose and record. Later I took some classes in college that were more advanced, and they really helped. For photography I would recommend knowing it as much as I could from reading and researching, before actually going to school for it. If I went to school for something, I would want it to be for the most advanced information I could ascertain and not waste my education, time or money.

do you know off camera flash? do you know exposure? do you have any training or photographic skills? you dont need a degree - but one wouold teach you technique, artistic and business qualities first learn photography, schools are the fastest and best way for humans to learn - hence we all go there to learn say maths and science - to parts of photography so learn the craft, write and implimentg a business plan and your chance of sucess will be much greater a

you don't have to. as long as you can prove your work of how good you are.

No, but some certification or training helps. And definitely experience goes a long way.

Experience is more important than a degree in this area! if you want to own your own shop, it would also be helpful to get some business help to run it!

Nope, don't need a degree, but you best know what you are doing.
