Nikon Capture NX2 software. After editing, why do my JPG's "color representation" properties say uncalibrated?
-
I'm fairly new to digital photography and have been looking for a good photo editor for the PC. I like Nikons Capture NX2 program the best. I've been using it just to open JPG's, edit them and save them again. Afterwards, when i look at the image properties in windows explorer the "color representation" property always says "uncalibrated!" I had a look at what the property would normally of been before opening and editing in NX2 and it always originally says sRGB. What does all this mean? Am i doing something wrong? Is it anything to be worried about? Many Thanks

Answer:
It seems that there is some kind of issue between the term "calibration" and what Windows Explorer calls "Color representation" (sRGB or AdobeRGB) While I have been using Nikon dSLR's since 2002, I have never used Nikon's NX2. Instead, I use Adobe Lightroom3 now and it provides the best work-flow of any program I have ever used. If you are still a student, you can find Lightroom in the student store for under $90 You may want to read "CMYK 2.0" by Rick McCleary to better understand the whole process from choose the color workspace (sRGB or AdobeRGB) to monitor calibration and profiling and where you as a photographer fit into the whole process; from capturing the shot, to the responsibilities of the post production artists (creating pages for publications using InDesign) to the prepress professionals who create the CMYK separations used to turn those pages into magazines or books using an offset press

Yes, first of all don't read the answers but ask this question several times here. Secondly, DO NOT under any circumstances actually read the documentation that came with the software, this will likely cause your computer to blow up. Either that or don't worry about if it looks right and you can't be bothered to calibrate

I'll watch for an answer here. Adobe Camera RAW does the same thing. You can set it back to sRGB, but I never rememebr to do that and when I post something to Flickr, sometimes it looks washed out.
