What is the best video camera in the price range of 400-450?

What is a good DSLR camera in the 450-600 price range?

  • I am looking for a dslr camera in the 450-550 dollar price range. I am a filmmaker and have been without a still camera for 6 months and am getting a good tax refund back which would allow me to get a camera in that price range. I am using this as a still camera first but would like it to shoot pretty good video as well. I won't be purchasing a tripod only for on the fly shooting. In my research I've narrowed it down to two and was wondering if anyone had any experience with the Panasonic G2 or Nikon D3100 or if there is a Canon model in that price range that they can recommend. Thanks!

Two cameras come to mind, one well within your budget and one slightly over. They are: 1) The Sony SLT A33 which uses Sony's Translucent Mirror Technology. This technology allows full-time continuous auto focus whether you're shooting still pictures or video. It has a 7fps (frame per second) shooting rate, 2D and 3D Sweep Panorama, Auto HDR. Here are some reviews: http://www.alphamountworld.com/reviews/sony-alpha-a33-slt-review-alphamountworld http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/AA33/AA33A.HTM The Sony SLT A33 is about $150.00 over your $600.00 budget but does offer the latest technology. 2) The Pentax K-x. It was chosen by the Technical Image Press Association as their 2010 "Best DSLR Entry Level". Here is a review: http://www.shutterbug.net/equipmentreviews/amateur_digital_slrs/0510pentax/index.html The K-x has a CMOS sensor, Live View, HD Video, double/multiple exposure capability of from 2 to 9 images on a single frame with Auto EV Compensation that opens a whole new world of creative possibilities to you. The Pentax K-x is $499.00 which fits into your budget. So expand your horizons and take off the Nikon/Canon blinders and look at what else is available in your price range. Note that the Nikon D3100 requires Nikon's AF-S lenses if you want auto focus and the often suggested Canon XS is a 3 year old model that's 3 years behind in technology. Newest technology - Sony SLT A33 Most "bang for the buck" - Pentax K-x

D3100 has some advantage as far as video is concerned.

I love Canon....it's what I have tended to use over the years.....I've taken little forays into Nikon, Olympus, Minolta and Leica but most of my cameras have been Canons. So having said that, I will say this. I am not impressed with the current entry level Canons. The 1000D....I think it's called the XS in the U.S. is junk.....I mean really junk. The model up from it, the 550D (T2i) is better but not by much. I have had a little play with the Nikon D3100 and I think for what you are paying it's a very good camera. Another camera well worth a look and perhaps even a little cheaper is the Pentax K-r. Don't know anything about the Panasonic G2. Another option that might be worth considering is something like a Canon G12. Really the biggest advantages of a DSLR are the amount of glass you get and the fact that you can change the glass to suit the job. If you don't plan on ever buying more than a single lens, the Canon G12 is worth considering. It has a viewfinder, a hot shoe, lots of manual control if you want it and you can put it in your pocket. At the moment when I sleep in the dirt with bugs, I have an old Nikon Coolpix P5100. If I drop it off a cliff into a river I don't really care, it weighs less than an MRE and probably tastes better if it comes down to it and it does a pretty good job. But I've been thinking for a while that I might replace it with a Canon G12.
