How do you set up a website?

How do i set up my own photography website?

  • I know this question has probably been asked many times but i'll ask anyway. I am amateur photographer and enjoy taking photographs! Last week i had someone contact me via my Flickr account from the Museum of Exeter, England. He wanted to buy one of my images to use in a display at the museum. After selling him the image, i am now really interested in creating my own photography website to advertise my work and hopefully get more people buying my images. I have no idea where to begin. I do not have a clue on how to do web design so would be looking for a website that provides easy set up and design. I don't want something that looks too cheap and has the hosts name all over the website. I would be prepared to pay to have my own domain name. Also, what would i actually need for people to buy my images on the website. Obviously, from what i've written above, i have no idea where to start. Anyone point me in the right direction? thanks :) Oh and here is my Flickr Photostream http://www.flickr.com/photos/jamie-mitchell/

The easiest way would be to get web hosting which includes one click install of Wordpress, then just install some Photo Gallery theme (just google wordpress themes). For hosting I recommend one of these: http://www.webhostinglist.org iPage is currently on sale for just $3.50/month! The full price for one year of hosting is $42/year. Their hosting plan includes: - Free domain name (.com, .net, .org) - Unlimited storage and bandwidth - Unlimited email addresses per domain name They include a free point & click online site builder so you can create a website without any programming (easily, just by drag and drop) or you could install Wordpress (they include easy, one click install from their control panel), choose a theme that you like, and start adding content. They also have a great custom control panel with OneClick installs of all the popular software like Wordpress, Joomla, Forums, Chat, Photo Galleries, Online stores and a lot more.

Hi there, Well as far as creating your own website (for free) www.wix.com is really easy and fun with pre-made templates. You could always pay to create your own website but if your not overly serious as of yet I would recommend wix. Someone else has already suggested www.deviantart.com which I would also recommend. That site also allows you to sell your artwork. Well all the best! - oh and check out my wix - i'm just starting up so it's not overly flash or anywhere complete. www.wix.com/elenievie/artist

Start with something like Photoshelter for the back end and wordpress for the front. Photoshelter handles keywording, search functions, licensing, and print sales. My site uses wordpress for the front end and Photoshelter for the sales: http://www.altitudegallery.com If you don't know what you are doing, I highly recommend hiring a designer. There is a lot to learn about building a website from scratch. Here are some of the top mistakes I see people make: 1) Flash. Flash is dead. It should be removed from the web entirely. It is not supported by mobile devices, it uses dated code, and it is not SEO compliant. 2) Music. Unless you are selling music, get it off of your site. 3) Speed. There is an art to getting a website to run quickly. 4) Navigability. It needs to be easy to navigate. Designers know how to do this, most amateurs do not. 5) Cross platform compatibility. Just because it looks good on your browser does not mean it will look the same on an iPad. You need a developer that knows how to create a site that is consistent. 6) Avoid free sites. Sites from weebly, webs, wix, and the like look cheap and unprofessional. They also rely heavily on flash.

I have been setting up websites for my own personal use now for many years and I would highly recommend using Wordpress for setting up your website. It is highly flexible, easy to manage and is FREE. There are many pre-made website templates for Wordpress to use including ones that will suit your needs. I would highly recommend using 123 Easy Hosts as your hosting company (www.123easyhosts.co.uk) as you can get hosting for less than 50p per week or for unlimited hosting for only £1.05 per week. Plus if you contact them about your needs they can set up your Wordpress site for you. Also, they offer a 30 day money back guarantee and No contracts and No set up fees. So there is nothing to loose really. Take a look at them. I think it will be worth it. Best of luck with whatever you choose.

Best is to use Ultimate Web Builder. It is very dynamic and flexible and very easy to use. You can create your own design with it. It has a built-in SEO tool to build traffic to your website and a lot more features. It has a photos app where you can create slideshows and galleries, batch upload and also batch watermarking. And e-commerce too.
