How can you edit pictures?

How can I edit my pictures better?

  • I use GIMP to edit my pictures, but I'm not very good at it. I use a lomo effect when editing at the moment: http://www.flickr.com/photos/amandaandhercamera/ But I would like to improve these. I would like to edit my pictures like these: http://www.flickr.com/photos/eva_patikian/6929260663/in/photostream (I use the same camera as her and she also uses GIMP and ToyCamera Analog Colour, which I don't know how to use) http://www.flickr.com/photos/thisbeatingheart/6779035762/ ( I don't know what she uses) Are there any tutorials for this or plugins for gimp or even another free picture editing software? Thank you :)

I agree with what john d has said already, she is taking her photos with more care and attention to lighting and composition. Unfortunately when editing an image, you can't really make it any better if the image isn't good to begin with. Concentrate on that aspect first, then the editing will be easier. As far as editing is concerned, have you tried the lomo script for GIMP? it's free. http://registry.gimp.org/node/7870 It has a bunch of vintage type effects to choose from, the examples on the web page don't really do it justice. Here's a better example of some of the presets available in the lomo script: http://i.imgur.com/SfpFC.jpg - and you can change the amount of noise, more or none at all, you can change the amount of blur, or fading, and the colours using sliders. Simply download the elsamuko-lomo.scm and put the file in your scripts folder. In Windows that is located at C:\Users\YourUserName\.gimp-2.6\scripts - then restart GIMP. Then you will find a new lomo filter under Fitlers > Light and Shadow > Lomo. Have fun!!

Shoot in the same light as she does and reduce your contrast.

A quick look at the flickr photostreams that you link to, I would say that to edit like the first example, you would need to understand the use of layers and masking. for the second, unfortunately I do not think it is editing . The photographer is taking more carefully composed shots. For some ideas on what you can do with your photos (FREE) try this web page, http://www.squidoo.com/phototools

Nice photos. To be honest, I always use Photoshop to edit my photographs mainly because I've been a user for quite some years now and I'm comfortable with the program. If you have an iPad or a Mac I would recommend getting Snapseed. It's not completely free but for £15 on Mac and around £5 on iPad I think it's an absolute bargain! I have attached a link to some literature for you... http://www.snapseed.com/ http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/snapseed/

If you have Facebook, you can use picknic by Facebook Or if you have an iPad or iPod touch, you can use photoshop express. Tutorials can probably be found on YouTube. I hope this helps!

Try this gimp tutorial out: this method may do the trick. http://gimpedblog.blogspot.com/2011/05/gimped-blog-gimp-tutorial-give-photo.html
