Who are some of the greatest photography critics?

Can someone who's good at film/movie making also be good at photography?

  • Next year, I'd like to take either film or photography, and I'l probably take film. I'm also taking information technology, part of which is based on photoshop, so I wouldn't miss that part of photography. Is film similar to photography, and as I improve in film, could I also improve at photography? I really like both and can't pick.

  • Answer:

A lot of the famous film directors were stills photographers first, Hitchcock and David Lean come to mind. And it shows in their work, the lighting, composition etc. is common to both. Film making is a lot more technical than stills photography as the slowest shutter speed you can use is 1/24th of a second (the frame rate for 35mm film), they usually used 180° shutter which meant a fixed shutter speed of 1/48th of a second and they couldn't alter ISO as that would look different (more grainy), colour balance has to be the same in every shot or you would see cuts etc. etc., it's a long list of things you have to pay attention to and know about. I'm both but they both are different arts. Yes they are both entertainment and crafty but they require different editing tools and a completely different system. However, they both require a perspective, opinion, eye, steady hand & I ALWAYS say a perfect picture is one that tells a story & a good movie is one where EACH & EVERY scene made up of a good shot. I'm confident you can do both but perfect each one on it's own, the similarities of the sister art will be obvious as yOu begin to get similar with each. Best Wishes! WOuld love to see your future art work on here.

I say take photography first. Learning how to get a certain look in a still image will give you a much better understanding of video/film aesthetics. Anyone with modern equipment can get what is defined as a proper exposure according to a tonal histogram. The first thing you must know is that there is no such thing as a proper exposure. By this I mean that the exposure of a shot will change based on the mood you are trying to convey. It is easier to learn this in still photography then apply it to video/film than the flip side.

I will say that people are looking for and more. If you can shoot well in there, than you can do it here too. It’s just starting period for you, try working with an experienced person to learn new things.

You can achieve it. It just may take longer to learn them both. People can have skills in more than one area.

I do both professionally and I know plenty of others who do as well. It's actually pretty common.

I think u should pick film because u have to know a lot about photography when u are making a film. For me both sounds really fun!
