How To Learn Photoshop?

How can I learn how to use Photoshop to edit my photography?

  • I'm starting to do photography, mostly of people, but I want to learn how to use Photoshop to edit them. In other words, make them look more professional. Is there any good website I can go to?

  • Answer:

Firstly, be careful about using PS to "make them look more professional". You will likely just end up making them look worse until a. you can make a good picture in camera b. you know PS well enough to "enhance" an already good shot rather than try and rescue a bad one. As to learning it. Obviously, get a good book, Adobe Photoshop for Photographers is a good one. It is a fairly weighty tome but it is a good one imo. Try and get on a couple of courses, if you are in a reasonable sized city then chances are there are a number around. Start with a beginners course. Most people make the mistake of jumping straight in and not knowing the basics. Then there are countless web sites which have tutorials for you to try out. Have fun. Oh and the latest version of PS has an anti "colour splash" coding - anyone trying that and the programme self-destructs.

You have two choices. 1) take a class at your local community college (under $300) and buy Photoshop CS4 Extended in the school store for $200 2) buy Photoshop CS4 for $700 ($1000 for Photoshop CS4 Extended) and use the try and fail method attempting to learn how to use Photoshop Adobe includes tutorials with their fine program and there are also Adobe on-line tutorials. Did you know that if you learn to use your camera well, you will not have to "fix" anything using a program like Photoshop, but of course that is a different set of classes.

The cheapest solutions is Photoshop Alternative software, which is much more cheaper then Photop, and very easy to use, I am using it for months and very much satisfied, very user friendly I must say.

I'm currently majoring in Graphic Design & I do Photoshop tutorials every day almost. I would suggest simply going to Google and searching "Photoshop tutorials photo editing" or "Photoshop tutorials photo effects" I liked this site a lot...but it's mainly to change colors and add effects: http://photoshopessentials.com/photo-effects/ There are a few good photo enhancing things on there. Good luck! PS. Photoshop is expensive. I know they usually have a 30 day free trial, but after that's up then you need to buy it. If you're a student at a university they almost always give major discounts ( I go to Indiana University and they even offer Adobe products for free! =D )

I am with "fhotoace" on one very important point. It is much better (and easier) to take a good photo in the first place, than it is to "fix" it, later, in Photoshop. The start of a "professional" looking photo is in knowing how to use the camera in the first place. Photoshop is not going to fix a badly focused shot. It is not going to fix a badly posed or composed photo. It is never going to make an image as good as one that was captured properly IN THE CAMERA. What do you think "professionals" did BEFORE digital cameras and Photoshop? But, moving on, Photoshop is an ideal tool for what used to be called "post shooting," or "darkroom" work. Before Photoshop, there was a LOT that could be done, after the shot was taken, to make changes and even "tweak" shots that weren't quite perfect. But it took a LOT of time and effort. Yes, even some sweat and tears to make happen what SHOULD have been done at the time the shutter was released. The good news is that, with digital cameras, and applications like Photoshop, the time to make these "post shoot" changes was vastly shortened. The five, ten, fifteen minutes spend in a darkroom, adjusting an exposure could now be done in one or two minutes. But still, that one or two minutes could be elimitated by the five seconds it takes to make sure one's exposure and angle were correct while still behind the camera. So, fine, Photoshop exists and people will STILL depend on it. It is a wonderful tool and I admit to using it. And I use it a LOT. Besides being a replacement for a film darktoom, it is also a great creative tool in it's own right. It is a POWERFUL tool in the hands of a knowledgable user. A Photoshop "Power User" can create things that were, nearly, impossible, in the times of film photography. It is an indespensible tool and is the center of my work as a freelance designer. By far, in my opinion, the BEST tutorial for Photoshop is the "Classroom in a Book" series, by Adobe. It is the one used by Adobe Certified Trainers. A website can show you a series of tricks and effects, but a good tutorial or class can show you how to use the entire tool. With this knowledge, you can learn how to do ALL the Photoshop is capable and how to create your OWN effects and tricks, not just copy someone else's technique. For $700, you might as well learn EVERYTHING Photoshop has to offer you. Why buy an entire 767 jetliner if all you are going to do is taxi your friends up and down the runway? Why buy a two hundred thousand dollar sports car if all you are going to use it for is to fetch groceries?

First, take better pictures where you don't need photoshop. That's probably my #1 tip. Photoshop enhances good pictures, by no means does it make a mediocre picture great, most of the time not even good. Honestly, I just figured most of it out. I know how to do what I need to do. If I need to get that much more advanced help for a photo, I will occasionally look something up, or more often than not, retake the picture better the next time. Photoshop is no safety net. Its like putting makeup on an ugly girl. No amount of it will make her beautiful. No offense to anyone.
