Whats the F stop for SLR (Film) Camera?
-
I have this SLR camera and its kits lens i've shot with it and since you couldn't change the F stop in SLR cameras only the shutter and the ISO comes with the film. I've always assumed that it's standard F stop if F5. THEN! I wanted to change my SLR lens to a 50mm F1.8 So what now is the F stop? does it change? Is it still F 5? or the lowest F stop the lens could go like F1.8? Appreciate it :))

Answer:
It appears you do not have control over your f-stop. This article might help you http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/eos/eoscamera/EOS8885000/eos8885000.htm

Uh...I've never owned an SLR that you *couldn't* change the aperture (the "f stop", which is set on the lens, not the camera body). The rest of that babbling nonsense, someone else can deal with .
The volume of light can be measured in units of Exposure Value. A sunny day on the street has an exposure value of 15. You can expose for that particular volume of light with stops. ISO, aperture and shutter speed all can increase or decrease the exposure in measurements of stops. Using the basline of EV 15 sunny day: ISO 100, shutter speed 1/100, aperture f/16 I can "stop down" by moving my aperture by one stop. My exposure is now ISO 100, shutter speed 1/100, aperture f/17. This would fit an EV 16. I can also change either my ISO, or shutter speed to stop down one stop. ISO 100, shutter speed 1/200, aperture f/16 is also appropriate to an EV 16. It's a balancing act. ISO 100, 1/1000, f/1 is the same exposure as ISO 100, shutter speed 2 seconds, f/64. Your minimum f-stop will be determined by the equipment you have. I believe a f/0.75 exists (At $14,000). You will control your aperture with the aperture ring. Or if it is a completely electronic setup, there are controls on the top display to set the exposure.
the camera does not have an f-stop, the lens does. You CAN change the f-stop in SLR cameras (probably not yours, but in most other models you can). If you could not change your lens from f5, then maybe that was the only f-stop your lens had (are you talking about a mirror lens? Those are usually f8 only) If your new lens is f1.8, then that is the lowest fstop (I don't know what the highest f-stop is, but probably like f32 or something) If your camera does not let you control the aperture, then that means it does it for you. (this is sort of the opposite of the nikon EM, which let you set the aperture but not the shutter speed). If that's the case, then just make sure you have enough light (according to your meter) and shoot.

Actually yes you can change the F-stop. There is no slr film or digital that you can't. Look on the lens itself. It should be a ring close to the focusing ring. Got bored and decided to look a little deeper into your question. First, I forgot (duh!) I actually have a film slr that has no aperture control. It doesn't have shutter speed control either. About the only thing you can do is set it on one of its auto modes and you can focus manually as well. Bottom line though it appears as though your EOS 888 is similar. They are kind of glorified point and shoots.

Sounds like you might have one of the Minolta HT series of film SLR's. Everything was auto with picture modes instead of full manual control if I recall. Let us know if this is the case. Otherwise, you should full control of your f-stop

On most modern cameras (including AF film SLRs), you set the aperture on the camera, not the lens. You'll need to let us know which Canon film camera you have, then maybe we can help you. Peace.

Most average quality SLR lenses will go from around F 1.8 - F 11. You can buy lenses with larger ranges, but for the average person those are unnecessary.
