What does an advertising agency do?

What questions need to be asked when taking a brief from an advertising agency?

  • I need to know what process is undertaken when a still's production company is asked to supply a quote on a brief provided by an advertising agency. What key questions need to be asked by the production manager??

  • Answer:

I would ask what the budget is and then work your quote around that, or if your confident that you've got the job do your quote but add at least 20% on everything to make a good profit (it's not a bad thing every agent/photographer does this) ask for the expenses at the start of the job (so you don't stress out your accounts) and most importantly, get the brief and any reference shots/images and any other info about how they want the job done. If it's for advertising and your client wont tell you the budget or you can't ask, over price it then bring down.

Other answers

1) ask to speak with the art director handling the job. 2) ask the art director what they are going to use the pictures for, leaflet, newspaper print, billboard - this question would allow you to know the allowance for cropping. 3) ask whether they want hard copy (actual printed photo) or slides or digital copy on a CD or both. 4) indoor or outdoor shoot. 5) how many products they are shooting (could be alot of item if its a leaflet with many products and could take up more than a day) 6) check to see if they needed any special prop that they expect you to provide. thats about what i can think of at them moment.
