Answer:
There are some viruses that can be sent to your computer in image files ( like jpeg) Every time you look at a picture on the web it is downloaded to a temp file on your computer before you see it. but most virus scan software deals with these effectively. I am also guessing flickr would scan thier site for these

yes, virus is transmitted through the eyes and infect by thought process, the only way to avoid this is by wearing a foil hat. no, looking in a site will not give your computer a virus, downloading some images may give your computer a virus, if they are infected with a virus themselves. most sites have anti-viral computerware in place. and you should have some in your computer if you don't get some.

Have I heard of this, no. Can it happen, yes. Yahoo's server once caught a virus from what I hear (could be urban legend though). Everything is susceptible. If your worried about viruses you should make sure that your computer is updated frequently. Most updates render viruses useless, or you could look at it as most viruses exploit something in your computer that hasn't been patched yet. Either way most updates help fix the problems. You will also want a good anti-virus program and a good firewall (windows firewall is a joke). You should only have one anti-virus and one firewall (if you get a third party firewall program just turn Windows firewall off). http://www.majorgeeks.com/Avira_AntiVir_Personal_-_Free_Antivirus_d955.html This is the one I use and it does a good job, although I don't go poking around the sites that are known for viruses either. http://www.majorgeeks.com/ZoneAlarm_Free_d388.html This is my firewall I have used for years. It's just great IMO. Since your already there you should look at some anti-spyware as well. http://www.majorgeeks.com/SpyBot-Search_&_Destroy_Tools_d2471.html The only free spyware engine that actually blocks spyware (or at least it used to be the only one, it was the first), all the other free programs will remove the spyware after it gets on your computer. All of these are legally free to use for non-commercial use.
