How do you make transparent text on gimp?

How do you make a picture like this?

Anyways,I'm not very good with creating images like that. But I have to ask,how do you think the artist did that? With the wings,text,etc. Any help would be appreciated. Also,if it was for photoshop {and photoshop only,you can't make a good picture like that without photoshop} then please comment with:"Nick fell into glass." Lol,I don't know why I want anyone to right that,but yes. {Also,yes,it is off of Ghost Adventures} But it's possible to make something that good {with no gimp,photoshop,etc.} then please just answer normally,lmfao.     Not hard but photoshop is involved. Two parts to it really.. 1. The magenta color is a solid color layer, and set to "color" 2.Wings are most likly just from brush packs. Nick fell into glass
