    Gimp. Why? Because 1) it is open source. 2) it runs on my Linux os. 3) it is free! 4) Does everything that I want - layers, curves, masks, levels, channels, clone, heal, resample, filters, scripts, plug ins. Without shelling out a penny - in comparison with a certain over rated, over hyped, and very over priced alternative. 5) well supported by community and on YouTube. 6) Accompanied by UFRaw, does all that I want to my images, from RAW file to finished .jpeg.

I dont see lhotoshop on that list photo shop is the industry standard.

I don't see my program listed above. I have been using Adobe Photoshop for about 15 years and see no reason to change.

Photoshop is the industry standard and is the best (but not on your list). Gimp is a good bet. It has all the basic features most people look for and is open source.
