Photography vs. Photography and Design.

Is it worth majoring in photography? Or should I choose communication design?

  • Hey! So I've been a serious amateur photographer (well, kind of professional since I get paid to take pictures, but you know what I mean) for a while now, and I am planning on transferring out of my college to go to a school in NYC. I am also really good at drawing and design, and I know communication design (graphic design, basically) is much more employable and steady of a job than photography is. The thing is, it's my dream to be a fashion photographer making a good living , and as a photo major I'd learn the ins and outs of studio and on location lighting. I'm just nervous that in the future I would regret not majoring in something more broad and employable. So I ask, is going to photography school really worth it? Or should I do communication design (which I enjoy, but it isn't my true passion) and do photography electives? Thanks! Here's my work, if you are interested :) www.flickr.com/dgrubz

  • Answer:

Go for design with a minor in photography. The photography classes will count as electives.
