What is "contrast" in photography?

What are contrast filters in photography and what do they do?

  • Answer:

In film photography using BW film, any of the "warmer" color filters (light yellow to deep red) will increase contrast some when used in front of the camera lens. However, nothing beats a well exposed negative for this concept. . In BW printing, in a darkroom, because single contrast grade paper is so hard to find, and the fact you would need 5 different packages for the 5 contrast grades available, variable contrast paper for BW printing is far more available and easier to use.. . In this use, the same concept is used but now in placing filters over the light source, from pale yellow to deep magenta to control contrast. . http://www.google.com/search?q=variable+contrast+filters&hl=en&prmd=imvns&source=lnms&tbm=isch&ei=R5pnT_bULfP3sQKjprCICQ&sa=X&oi=mode_link&ct=mode&cd=2&ved=0CCsQ_AUoAQ&biw=1280&bih=626 . In and with digital these have no use what so ever and any contrast adjusting will be done in your image editing program (of your choice).

Other answers

In film photography they are generally used in enlargers to control the contrast of an image. If you wanted more contrast in your image, you would use a higher filter, if you wanted less, a lower one was used. I use Ilford Multigrade Filters: http://www.porters.com/ilford-multigrade-filters-size-35-x-35-set-of-12.html
