Software to design band logo and superimposing it on a picture?

I want to design a band logo and put it on a photo- such as the sky.I want this logo to look like it Belongs in the picture(without , for instance a white box around the logo).What software from download.com should I download.The software must be free and not take up a whole lot of space. Thanks for your help!
