How can I do an HDR image?

Is anyone familiar with the Sony Image Data Converter or HDR in general?

  • Hey guys. I know I'm super late with HDR, but I've really been wanting to give it a try. Right now I have a Sony A200 and the IDC software for it. I have been using the bracketing on it trying out the 0.3 and 0.7 settings. This is the only way I know of to get the picture I need to make an HDR image. However, I heard that you can just shoot one picture in RAW and use the Sony IDC to make 2 other images (with higher and lower exposures) and use either Photoshop or something like Photomatix to bring the pictures together. I really have no idea what I'm doing and could definitely use some guidance. If anyone could explain how to generate 2 additional photos in IDC (lazy, I know, but I have yet to master bracketing), that would be really great. Or, if anyone owns an A200 and has successfully made HDR pictures, could you let me know what you did? Thanks.

There is NOTHING special about bracketing your shots. Set the camera on a tripod and then make your three exposures. One exposing for the shadows, one exposing for the highlights and one normal shot. Make the adjustments using your shutter speed. Making changes in aperture will cause depth of field issues.

Follow fotoaces info on creating the necessary images for your HDR. You cannot create a decent HDR image just by manipulation a single RAW (.ARW) file to create you different exposures. You'll also find that you'll need extra software to create any final HDR images and neither IDC or PMB that came with your camera is capable of performing this.
