Can I paint masonite?

What's the best way to oil paint on tempered Masonite?

  • I just bought from Lowe's Hardware a 4'x8' panel, cut into 4 2x4 panels. I want to create 4 large landscape paintings. I painted 3 coats of white flat latex house paint on the panels, and I've noticed warping already. Should I brace it with wood? Or paint the back? I've read different things online. Will the house paint hold up? I think gesso is so expensive. I did sand lightly between coats, not sure if this helps.

  • Answer:

Not sure about the warping issue, but yes house hold emulsion is fine as a primer. I sometimes paint on hardboard with oils and it's standard practise to prime the surface with 2 or 3 coats of white house hold emulsion. No worries !
