Can a roller brush be used 2 create a more even coat, than a 3" wide brush, when priming a canvas with Gesso?
-
I have a small, well..mini, painting roller brushed that ive used for painting the baseboard in my room. Could a brush like this be used for applying a second and third coat of GESSO Primer to a strecher/canvas for acrylic painting? I used a wide(3") painters brush for the first coat to make sure the primer was worked into all of the holes in the fabric, but it seemed to dry pretty unevenly. I was wondering if a mini or even regular sized roller brush would be more effective in creating an even coat?

Answer:
Well, I disagree with the others... I use rollers all of the time. I lightly sand with 400 grit between layers and on my final layer. Sanding is KEY no matter what you use.

I would stick with the brush too but there are ways to get a really smooth surface. I would mix gesso with a little water and apply 2 or three coats being patient between each layer and letting the gesso dry properly. Do one layer with horizontal strokes, one layer vertical, and one layer diagonal. Once the final layer is dry use 120 or higher grit "wet" sandpaper and carefully wet sand the surface using the sandpaper and a sponge to lightly apply water. Once you have wet sanded the whole surface use moistened paper towels or rags to remove excess gesso particles. Take care to sand lightly as removing too much gesso will expose raw canvas and negate the purpose of gessoing in the first place. Also if the surface is too smooth the paint might not hold on! N.B.- You could try painting on masonite or MDF panels. There are no canvas "bumps" so you can start off with a very smooth surface on which to work.

I think you want to stick with the brush. (unless you let it get hard) but a brush will help you get in those porous areas. just kind of daub it in the dryer areas and then stroke over the entire thing after your pores are filled

i do use a roller, but i feel a large palate knife gives me an even quicker layer. Then again i do use large brushes.... from time to time.

The roller is good for texture on your canvas
