What store sells the best art supplies?

most art stores have good supplies and not so good supplies. i think your better off finding out what brands people like. i have never seen much of a difference in brands of pencils. for brushes my favorite are escoda for canvas i encourage people to build your own or have someone else build them for you, its cheeper and the result is better. some of the pre-stretched canvases that are around now from china are gessoed with house paint. i think fredrix is the most reputable brand but you should probably check with someone else on that. be sure not to get the ones stapled on the side. i have also heard the ones with the layer of rubber on the back are to be avoided as well because the wood canvas and rubber all expand and contract at different rates. for oils and watercolors i recommend winsor newton for acrylic paint i recommend novacolor or golden novacolor you can only get from there site, it is not resold in any stores because they want to keep the cost of the paint down. http://www.novacolorpaint.com/orderform.htm if your into shopping online dick blick, jerrys art-o-rama, and utrecht are popular options. all three also have local stores http://www.dickblick.com/ http://www.utrechtart.com/ http://www.jerrysartarama.com/ i have used all three of these without any problem. if your into facebook and follow them they have special offers every once and awhile. utrecht probably has the offers the most often but they all have good sale and clearance sections.

Personally, I buy my art supplies from 2 different online art houses, Daniel Smith art materials and Cheap Joe's Art Stuff. Both were started by watercolor artists, but are not limited to watercolors. They carry a full range of supplies for any medium. Daniel Smith carries more specialty papers than Cheap Joe's. They also make specialty paints in all 3 mediums called Primatek, which are ground from natural minerals. They also make Iridescent paint and what they call Duochrome which has very subtle effects on white paper/canvas but when painted over black the colors pop and change in different light aspects. Cheap Joe's carries larger tubes of paint (I paint watercolor so the size of paint tubes varies from 5 ml to 37 ml) in more brands. I buy more specialty paints from Daniel Smith, but if I need a standard color I buy from Cheap Joe's because they carry the 37 ml size rather than 15 ml.
