Why is some art soo expensive?

  • http://www.myinterestingfiles.com/2009/05/15-most-expensive-paintings-in-the-world.html from things like Fashion designer's clothing like Versace and stuff and paintings like on that link. I mean come on the first one was just some scribble scrabble crap that anyone can do and it's going to be more than $140,000,000!? Any type of art that is just nothing but scribble scrabble or just has one color and is worth millions is just garbage. I mean what's the skill in that? Why don't they award that type of money to Nobel Prize winnning scientists who discover cures for cancers or drugs that cure deadly diseases? It just goes to show how screwed up the world is. Ohh and don't give me that "because its creative blah blah blah...." BS. I mean some paintings are really nice like that Adele BLoch portrait, but still I think art is ridiculous sometimes for being soo expensive.

  • Answer:

As my art teacher always has taught us the painting is only half the skill of the artist, the other is in the selling pitch. To be a "good" artist it is about convincing the museum or collector to want this piece, not so much of if it is even good or amazing. So it is like why a lawyer may cost more then another. It is just the way that they can persuade an audience.

Some art is so expensive because of the amount of time and effort put into it. If you've ever taken the time to create a real work of art, you'd know the amount of time and effort invested just to get it how you want it. A lot of stuff you think "anyone can do" is a lot harder than you think. Study the pieces you think are "scribble scrabble" closely. There's more balance and meaning than you'd think. I'm guessing you're quite young and haven't experienced real life yet. The world isn't so black and white. It's just the way life works, if you want to fix it, then don't spend any money on art, and instead donate your money to third world countries and cure research. Do what you want to, but don't be so judgemental, people will hate you for it.

You have a point, but remember that most paintings are rare. Rare, keyword. No, not rare because it's impossible to paint that (because honestly, I agree with you to a certain point) but rare because most famous famous artists have died and people stop and look back on their paintings and say, "A little hard to understand, but it's quite interesting... I wonder what he/she was thinking as he/she painted this? How did the world look to them?" But remember again that not all paintings are like that, and they're still worth millions. Hope I helped!

Paintings have different, special meanings to people. Someone's view of a painting may be different from the opinion of another's. Art has a great influence on our world and you just don't realize it.

most art is so expensive because of the market it comes into, if something is prized by critics a piece can go from being worthless to being priceless, taste in art is another matter, one person will like a classical style painting of religious icons where others will enjoy more abstract works, i personally am blown away by a painting made by clifford still which is little more than a blue canvas because it gives me a indescribable rush of emotion, to bring your argument full circle, a scientist can create a cure for a horrible disease, the cure can be purchased and patented by a pharmaceutical company and sold for outrageous prices, why charge so much for a drug that could be made generically and harbor the same results? the market
